In the spirit of Halloween, I offer two remarkable mangas that you should definitely check out.
The first is called Bleach. It follows the story of a red-haired kid that just so happens to have the ability to see the dead. Well, his power starts attracting very dangerous spirits called Hollows that decide his spirit energy might be quite tasty. Through a series of events, he absorbs the power of a ghost-slaying huntress and becomes a ghost-slayer himself. Now, he's forced to fight to protect the dead he once helped find peace, least they (or his friends) become consumed by Hollows. Good action and an interesting plot make this a solid read.
The second is called Death Note. This story follows a rather intelligent teenager who comes into the possession of a dangerous notebook: a Death Note. This notebook belonged to a Death God who "accidentally" left it in the human world. Once a human picks up the book, it becomes the possession of the human world and cannot be used by the Death Gods again. Why is the book special? Well, when you write the name of someone into the book, they die. Write in how they die and it happens to the letter. Not a lot of action here, but the storyline is incredible and the well-crafted development of the characters and tension make it compelling.

Thanks ManDroid! Yes, Bleach is awesome! I've seen an episode or two of the anime, but never read the mangas. I'll be checking out this Death Note. Keep 'em comin' dude!

Picked up DeathNote Vol. 2 yesterday. I saw that it had been released in the window of the Waldenbooks and knew I needed to bring it home. The story escalates very quickly in Vol. 2 and a few supporting characters suddenly take main stage. Still, if you're looking for an action-oriented manga, I recommend something like Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita). But, if you want a well-crafted, post-modern horror - this is the book for you.
