Hold on to your widgets, there's a new Gen Y social network morphing MySpace with a SecondLife ... basically tying together 2D and 3D worlds. Yep, a new MySpace-style virtual, Web 3.0 world. Kaneva : A Different Approach to Virtual Worlds?

Kaneva, a virtual world that launched this year, is the brainchild of Chris Klaus, who developed it after he sold his internet security company to IBM..... ....Kaneva encourages the use of true identities and personal information to help people interact. He says virtual interaction is much more immediate than in real life. “It’s much easier to read your profile in the virtual world and see you have the same friends and interests and, all of a sudden, you have those connections. Is Kaneva a Disruptor?

Recently, I’ve seen a great deal of positive press about the virtual world Kaneva. Second Life has been the big player in the space, stealing much of the spotlight from other worlds. But, as we’ve shared in previous blog posts, it’s certainly not the only virtual world out there. With millions and millions of people creating virtual lives, this space will only grow and reshape as the market defines itself. So, this Forbes article (”Rocking the Virtual World”) says: Among the producers of virtual worlds Atlanta’s Kaneva may be on its way to becoming the most “disruptive,” according to Strategy & Innovation, a Cambridge, Mass. newsletter founded by Harvard Business School’s Clayton Christensen. That’s quite a statement. But, why Kaneva? Certainly Second Life has the greater mind share. Well, the article goes on with a quote from founder Christopher Klaus: “Second Life currently has huge mind share, but they are after a different market,” says Klaus. “We want people who have never played videogames before.” This is significant. Kaneva, unlike Second Life (and other worlds), encourages users to replicate themselves in-world, as opposed to creating a fantasy version of themselves. Kaneva wants to be the MySpace or Facebook of virtual worlds - a place to openly share your life and your interests with your friends. In fact, Kaneva has often been compared to the social network MySpace, not a frequent comparison for Second Life.

Why Virtual Worlds Are Overtaking the Game Industry

More and more game developers seem to be turning their attention to virtual worlds. Why? Although games can have communities around them, virtual worlds do very well in facilitating communities. Perhaps gamemakers could learn some valuable lessons from worlds like Second Life or Raph Koster's newly announced Metaplace. The bar for online gaming has been raised, with community becoming as important as gameplay. Virtual worlds and Web 2.0 habits are driving users to worlds that support socializing instead of questing and user-created content instead of magic.

More Companies Are Using Virtual Worlds But Few Have Strategies to Deal With Them

A new report from The Conference Board finds that virtual worlds are emerging fast on the business landscape, but few companies have developed strategies to deal with them. Membership is now in the millions, and many of the participants are not just customers, but employees. A virtual world is a 3-D Internet-based simulated social networking community, usually modeled after the "real" world, with buildings, roads, meeting rooms, bars and billboards. Generally, many users participate at any time, with the interaction being immediate - taking place in real time. Some examples of virtual worlds include Second Life , Kaneva and There.

A Future for Live Music in Kaneva?

Oftentimes, when exploring brave new worlds or re-visiting old and forgotten ones, the ever-churning mind of the futurist sometimes has to endure the very things that others would be so quick to dismiss. Where Kaneva shines is with media– the management of media that occurs outside of the 3D space in that myspace/facebook type of environment. Those that are on the Kaneva grid, as well as those outside, are able to listen to the playlists, download, or dance accordingly. As this young virtual world evolves, it’s quite possible– if they take the right steps– it may very well be one of the most valuable new frontiers for the indie musician– for performances, promotion, and sales.

Kaneva, your world.. your imagination!

For about a month to be exact, I have been discovering the virtual world. I just had to see what was it all about. Second Life is probably the most known virtual world, and there are about 30 of them. The newest world that I know of is Kaneva. Simply put, Kaneva is a mash up of Myspace, YouTube and Second Life all together. In Kaneva you "teleport yourself, your media and your imagination into the modern-day 3D world ". So with Kaneva you get a 2D profile (like Myspace) that has your info, pics, blog and comment box... you get to upload your media: videos ( the YouTube part) and music, and you connect all that with your 3D self in after you download the World of Kaneva software.

MySpace Elements Could Make Kaneva the Real Thing

Virtual worlds, like Second Life and Entropia, are well… virtual. Avatars created in these worlds often have little or no relevance to their real life users. However, with the fairly recent creation of Kaneva, the line between the virtual world and the real world may begin to look rather blurry. Kaneva, which is still in its beta version, was developed by Chris Klaus, who created Internet Security Systems (ISS) and later sold it for $1.3 billion. Since selling ISS, Klaus has directed his attention full-time to designing Kaneva and giving a very different feel than virtually any other world out there right now.

I'm not saying Kaneva is the future; I'm just saying it could well capture a lot of little clicking fingers. [Now with further details.] I met with Kaneva CEO Christopher Klaus, COO Rob Frasca and marketing director Michelle Norwood yesterday at a Starbucks on the Upper West Side to hear what they're up to, and I was surprised to find a lot of it dovetailed with some of the things I like to blah on about here on 3pointD. They won't let me into the beta until next week because they're moving some servers around at the moment as well as barnstorming various bloggers and media outlets but the demo reel I saw showed a system that seemed to combine the expressive power of MySpace with the social power

VBI World

Brave New World?

I was just having a discussion with a colleague concerning on-line communities and virtual worlds. I had come across a service called Kaneva, a combination MySpace and Second Life. It's a very active on-line community. However, our discussion focused on the idea that there is a fundamental paradigm shift occurring in our society. More and more people are living a larger portion of their lives within these on-line communities. Since I deal so much with "virtual life" between managing on-line databases, distance reference and VBI World (in activeworlds.com's education universe) I have had the privlege to see more and more of this shift occurring, probably far more than the average librarian.

Kaneva Makes Seth Godin's Web 2.0 Traffic Watch List

There are literally thousands of "web 2.0" companies, and until now, there's been no easy way to compare which ones are getting traffic. The list of 926 sites below was inspired by the list started by Bob Stumpel and then added to by many others.

Kaneva Mixes Social Networking with Cool 3D Virtual World

Kaneva seems to be a cool startup shaping up well, providing users with a social networking as well as virtual world platform. The Atlanta, Georgia based company is founded by Christopher W. Klaus who also founded and served as the Chief Security Advisor of Internet Security Systems, Inc. (ISS), a company he created in 1994 and sold to IBM at a total value of over one billion dollars in October 2006.

This is going to be BIG

The Kaneva Virtual Carrot on a Stick Blog

So I signed up for yet another social network, Kaneva,  and *yay* my avatar plays in it.  And what's cool is that I'm not the only Oddcast avatar in there...  check out this cool use of SitePal for this movie review page.  One interesting thing going on in there though is that all the users are obsessed with friending, commenting and "raving" (giving a thumbs up) each other.  Why?  Because Kaneva has built  a 3D virtual world that is in closed beta and only available to its most active users.  Everyone seems to want in.  It's fascinating to watch and I'd bet that they couldn't get that kind of usage if they paid people in cash.

What you don't know about the video game industry just might surprise you. Generating revenues in excess of $10B in 2005, it has well eclipsed the $9B Hollywood film industry. What if I told you that the conditions were ripe for an explosion in this sector in Georgia?

Kaneva: The Future?

Virtual online world Kaneva is coming and it's bringing the future with it. While Kanevea (which means "canvas" in Latin) is called a virtual online world, it's actually much more than that. Virtual online worlds exist all over the Internet from games like Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft to Linden Lab's Second Life. What makes Kaneva special is the fact its part game and part social networking Web site.
