Jane's Story
Please note ** We have changed the name of this survivor to protect her identity.
13 year old Jane sat at her computer every night while her parents were watching TV in the next room. Jane has many friends and loves animals, one night in a chat room Jason, a 16-year-old high school student, and Jane started chatting. He told her that he loved animals, too. Jane began sharing a lot of personal information with Jason, trusting him to be her friend and believing he was who he said he was. She would chat with him about family matters, school events, and her dreams. Jason and Jane’s relationship became more serious. He even sent her a gift, a web cam. With one click of her mouse Jane’s whole world changed.
The cyber relationship lasted over a two-year period until Jane learned that the person she was communicating with was a middle aged man. He knew everything about her, including where she lived and what she looked like. He alienated her from her friends and her family. Soon, Jane became very ill. She couldn’t eat or sleep. She became severely depressed.
Jane finally broke the silence and told her mother. After contacting the authorities, this child predator, had already stolen more then two years of her life before he was brought to justice. Now 50 years old, this predator was found guilty in luring a teenage girl into sending him sexually explicit images of herself via the Internet. Jane testified that she was hurt and felt betrayed because she had shared so much of her life with the person she believed was a teen like her. She said he urged her to send the sexually explicit images of herself. She was terrified and devastated.
Jane is an intelligent, outgoing, beautiful girl that maintained, throughout this ordeal, a 4.0 grade average and graduated 5th in her class.
This is a perfect example of a real life situation. You don’t have to leave the safety of your home to become a victim of an online predator. You don’t have to be ugly or an outcast. You don’t have to have a low grade average to fall victim. It can happen to anybody.
If you or anyone that you know is suspicious of an online activity, please, BREAK THE SILENCE, tell your parents, your preacher, your teacher, a trusted adult, and contact your local law enforcement immediately! Be a hero, Jane is!

The Ocean & the Internet
Picture This:
You are swimming in the ocean. You know that it is filled with sharks and sharks are predators. You can't see them but, you know they are there. You don't know what direction they will come from or if and when they will attack.
The Comparison:
The Internet is just like the ocean. It is filled with strangers and strangers may be predators. You can't see them; their monitor is their mask. You don't know who they are; they can be anybody they want to be and you don't know what their intentions are. Like sharks swimming in the ocean searching for their prey; online predators surf the net searching for their next victim. They can be someone down the street or someone across the country. Like the shark an online predator will travel miles to get to their prey.

Letter from a Predator
I read your page, you live in Oklahoma. I know the town you live in and where you work because it is listed in your details. You have two children, girls to be exact! Kelsey, age 6 & Madison, age 3. They are very cute and you are very proud of them, I know this because their pictures are on your page. You are happily married to Justin for 12 years, he works nights. You have a dog Jasper and some fish. You spent Christmas at your mom’s house and made it home in time to wrap the girl’s gifts and get them under the tree. Luckily your mom lives in the next town. Your best friend Kathy (I know what she looks like and all about her too, she is the first picture on your top friends) are meeting at the mall on Thursday. I know this because it was posted in a comment.
I know your name Mary and your favorite color is blue and that you are 5’4”, green eyes, blond hair and drive a white Mazda oh and Justin drives a black Ford pick-up. You love Mexican & Italian food. CSI, Cold Case & House are your favorite shows. Your favorite comedy is Everybody Loves Raymond. The last person you spoke to is your brother Mike, he is third on your friends list.
There is so much more I can tell you about yourself and your family thanks to the information you placed on your page, in your comments, blogs and in survey bulletins. You have made it all very easy for me. Now it should not be so hard to find you.
Thanks!
Online Predator
TAKE THE CHALLENGE:
Get out a piece of paper and write down all the personal things about yourself, family and friends that you have placed on your page. Then read through your comments and write down the personal things you have posted. Go to (if any) surveys you filled out and posted as a bulletin and write that down.
This is how predators gather information about you, your loved ones and friends. Please think about what you post, if not for yourself, then think about all the kids that are doing this.
Don’t make a predator’s job easy…..Make a Difference!!!
Thank you and please be safe.
