Katharine McPhee - Over It
The beautiful lyric soprano popstar Katharine McPhee singing her single "Over It" live at Tonight Show 29/01/2007. And to answer those who wondering why I classify Katharine McPhee as a "lyric soprano" when they're certain she's an alto: First of all, you have to know that being a soprano isn't just about having a 'high' female voice (cause remember soprano ranges go anywhere from E3 to F6; thus overlapping with mezzo and alto ranges!)...It's about reuniting a list of qualities that make the singer fit into that particular category. And Kath just happens to be a soprano of lower range, much like Lara Fabian. Now, how can you differentiate a soprano from an alto? there are several ways, amongst others: 1) A light tone...And Katharine's tone is indeed light -almost "breathy"- when she doesn't use that chesty voice which is actually not good for her type (ie Since I Fell For You, Ordinary World)...That distinctive light quality is almost unique to sopranos in females; but you still need more clues to say for sure. 2) When the singer uses her lower range, it does not pick up a "dark", husky tone like a real alto would....And listen carefully to Kat, and you'll see the difference between her lower notes an that of an alto (ie India Arie, Anita Baker, Traci Chapman). Based on that (naturally light voice; softer colors in the lower voice) you're able to conclude without a doubt she's a soprano. And I guessed she's a soprano of the lyric genre, cause her "sweet" tones sound very pure when she uses them. (ie I Lost You, My Destiny)...Again, pure sweet tones are unique to lyric voices in both females and males singers. Final conclusion : Katharine is not an alto, nor a mezzo-soprano..she's a soprano.
