Troubleshooting

What does it take to play the Virtual World of Kaneva?

We recommend the following minimum hardware configurations to run the Virtual World of Kaneva on your computer:

Microsoft Windows XP
Intel or AMD 2GHz or faster processor
Nvidia 5200 series / ATI X700 series or higher
High-speed Internet connection
400MB hard disk space
512MB RAM

Installing gives me an error.

Make sure that you have permission to install software on your computer. Some user accounts in Windows don't have access to install new software. If you are reinstalling Virtual World of Kaneva, make certain that no files exist in your previous Virtual World of Kaneva installation folder. By default, this folder is at C:\Program Files\Kaneva\World of Kaneva.

The update process stops suddenly for me and I get a “can’t move file 5” error message.

If you get this error, you are probably using the new Windows Vista operating system. The Virtual World of Kaneva was developed for the Windows XP OS, but we are currently optimizing it for the Vista OS. We hope to have any problems with Vista worked out in the near future. It has been noticed that the User Account Control system and the Internet Security options on Vista tend to interfere with the Virtual World of Kaneva updating. You may want to look into this on your side, as we cannot make recommendations on your security settings.

I get “status code error=” when I try to log in to the Virtual World.

When you get this error, there are three things to try:

MAKE SURE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IS VALIDATED!
Clear all your browser cookies, restart your pc and try again.
Uninstall the Virtual World of Kaneva, delete the folder at C:\Program Files\Kaneva\World of Kaneva and then reinstall it fresh. You will not lose your items, apartment or credits.

I see the login screen, but I don’t see the boxes to put in my email address and password.

Users who have had this issue have either had less RAM than our system specifications call for ( 512MB) or have had video drivers that are out of date. Make sure you have 512MB of RAM or more and that your video drivers are up to date.

When I click to download or login to the Virtual World, I get a "World of Kaneva is already running" message, even though the application is not running.

This may be the result of your computer security software preventing unsigned ActiveX applications to be registered and/or to run. If you are using Internet Explorer 6 or 7, click Tools in your browser navigation, then Manage Add-ons, then search for "ClientPatcher Class" and enable it if it is not already enabled.

I lost my Kaneva password! How do I retrieve it?

If you are in possession of the email account we have on record, then it is easy for you to retrieve your password:

Go to the Kaneva web site at http://www.kaneva.com and click the 'Sign In' link, then the 'Forgot Password?' link to request your password.
Provide your email address in the Lost Password section, and then click Get Password.
You should receive an email in a few moments that will allow you to change the account's password. Click the link in the message to change your password.
At this point, the password has been reset and you should be able to log in with the new password.

Performance is erratic or slow, or the application ends unexpectedly.

Players who have reported this issue in general use a video card that doesn't meet the system requirements. As a guideline, verify that your video memory is at least 32MB and that no other major programs are running. Also, make sure to check the current system specifications to make sure that your computer is able to run the Virtual World of Kaneva.

If I have to reinstall the game, do I lose all my stuff?

No. All of your stuff and settings are stored at Kaneva.

The game client window goes blank.

Sometimes when your screensaver kicks in, the Virtual World of Kaneva game client window may display a solid color. If this happens, slightly resize to refresh the window.

Everyone else isn't seeing the video I'm watching on the TV or theater screen.

The video starts when you're near enough to watch it. Other players may start viewing before or after you. In future versions, we will be streaming video to everyone at the same time.

My avatar is stuck or moves awkwardly.

Here's a few things you could do:

Close any windows and menus that might be blocking game interaction.
Click your mouse pointer in an area of the game that doesn't contain the chat window or other menus.
Press the ESC key.
Travel to another part of the Virtual World, using your travel menu. You could be in a high traffic area.

I found a 'hole' in the world.

For the novice, holes are places where your avatar can go 'behind the scenes' or fall through the planned areas of the world. If you think you've found one, type /location in the chat window and copy down the XYZ numbers, or send us a screenshot that includes the location information in it. To get out of a “hole”, you can use your travel menu to go home, or another part of the Virtual World.

How do I use a deed, and what happens afterwards?

After you purchase the correct deed (see the next question), go to the place you want to upgrade. Once you're there, open your inventory menu and select the deed you want to use. Click Use and you've got your new place!

I tried using a deed, and it didn't work.

There's a few things to check: If you're upgrading your home, are you using an apartment-type deed? Deeds to theaters, cafes, conference rooms can only be used in hangouts. Are you in a place you own? Deeds can only be used in your own home or hangout.

How do I create a hangout?

Hangouts are the 3D extension of a Kaneva Community. To create one, go to the Kaneva web site, click Communities, select the 'Start a Community' button, and follow the instructions. You'll then be able to select your hangout in the game from the Travel icon.

What will happen to all my stuff (and my old place) when I upgrade my home or hangout?

Because an upgrade changes the shape of the place, we'll move all your stuff back into your inventory when you upgrade. You won't lose any of your furniture, but your customizations (such as furniture placement and patterns) don't get saved.
