his eyes were focused on the car ahead, but his thoughts were far away. 'it happened', she had said, 'just the way i always wanted it too'. 'what?' he replied, unsure of her meaning. 'i woke up this morning and it hit me immediately.....a warm glow....and excitement', she paused....he waited. when she continued, he read each word slowly, and carefully, ' i realized i'm in love with you.' a smile spread slowly across his face, now....just as it had then.
98 more miles......about 1 1/2 more hours thinking of nothing but her till he would finally first lay eyes on her.....touch her.....hold her.
'what's the first thing you will do when we meet?' she had asked. 'look deep into your eyes....to see the woman i know is in there' , he replied. dark, hazel eyes, she had told him. the color didn't come through on the pictures she had sent...both online and through the mail.
87 miles to go......"that's all i've done?" he asked himself. "11 miles since i last checked." his foot pushed the accelerator down a little farther. still, he can't stop smiling.
he thought of the first time they spoke on the phone....the first time he heard her sweet voice, her laugh. he remembered the first letter he'd recieved from her.....one page, typed........the 2nd letter.....10 pages....front and back...handwritten....arrived postage due. he had teased her about that, said she owed him 16cents. 'i may not have the money' she'd replied. 'we'll work something out' he retorted. 'LOL....mmmmmmm....sounds good to me.'
34 miles left. he pulled the directions out of his pocket and set them down beside him......
he thought of the things she had said in her letters. 'i don't understand this.....what's up with this?....my heart hurts!' ' i can't stop thinking about you.' 'when i go to bed at night.....i start thinking about being with you.....and.............'
there it is......the exit.....he turns off the highway....makes a left onto a smaller highway...and heads north....pulls out the directions and reads them again...determined to find the house with no problem.
almost there, he realizes he's running ahead of schedule....lol.....foot down too far on the accelerator....so he stops for gas and to kill a little time.
ok, he thinks to himself....it's time......he starts down the street.....checks and rechecks the slip of paper where he wrote the directions....winding all over the little piece of paper......
he makes the last right turn.....2 houses down......the excitement building up......he has to take deep slow breaths......
there it is.......he pulls up out front........trying to take his time...slowly turns everything off.......gets out of the car......starts up the sidewalk......
the front door opens......a woman steps out onto the porch....grinning. he slowly strides towards her, smiling. she grins impishly and opens her arms wide...........he reaches her......gazes deeply into her eyes.....as they embrace, he whispers in her ear......"i've waited so long for this."
