Warning
This column is not meant to offend anybody. I have many friends who went Greek whom are great people. Since I have been asked a lot about joining a fraternity, I figured I should finally give my true opinion on why I would never do it......
Welcome everyone once again to the column that no one reads.....The Super Journal.....I decided to take a day off because I honestly didn't have anything to talk about. This morning while lying in bed the idea of this entry popped into my head and I thought it would be a perfect topic for today. So now that I'm a senior the question comes up a lot in my I haven't joined any Greek organizations yet. Now that's a good question. It's the IN thing to do. To be honest with you I have become really disgusted with the whole thing. Why you ask???......well I'll tell you. The whole concept of the Greek organizations have become very twisted. Believe or not, there was a time I actually wanted to join one. It was back when I was at David's favorite school: Savannah State. But after much though I realize that I just wouldn't fit in. So what are my main reasons for being against it:
1.) I think it further separates us at a time when we should all be coming together......
And I'm not just talking about black people, I mean us as in everyone. To me it's like gang-warfare. You here this stuff like:
"Oh I can't talk to you because you're part of this fraternity and I am apart of another."
; or my favorite.....
"My sorority is better because we were started first"....."no mine is better because mine was started when someone left yours".....
And all the organizations seem to separate themselves from us "normal" people. It just really gets on my nerves. The worst thing is that they get into fights with each over a step competition....you know you've seen it. You go to a step show and someone wins and then at the after-party in the club a fight breaks out because someone is mad because their group didn't win. Nothing screams being a man like getting into a fight over stepping. And these aren't little play fights, I have seen people land in the hospital over this kind of stuff.
I don't feel like the original founders of some of organizations meant for this to be the way things are
.....Now let me specify:
I'm not talking about all Greek organization at every college, but you have to admit that this happens a lot more than it should......
2.) They are horrible liars.......
Now I could be wrong on this but I honestly have come to the conclusion that if any Greek organization(with the exception of the Christian ones...)tell you that they don't haze they are........
Now I have many examples of this but I can't share them because I don't want anyone coming after me. I also know that there is a way to avoid being haze but of course you're as respected much as the ones who are. Now what is wrong with hazing you ask??... Well that brings me to my third and final point......
3.) It's a conflict of interest for anyone who considers themselves a Christian......
Nothing says anti-Christian like first having to suck up to someone and make yourself seem lower than them and unworthy to breathe their air just so they can pick you. Then after they pick you and take all your money(another problem I have with it), they have the nerve to still treat you like crap for weeks. Then once you do make it pass that they want to call you brother or sister......Now that to me is just crazy..... What makes it worst is that some organizations that do that claim to go by Christian values. Clearly this is the exact opposite of the Bible. In the Bible it says to be a good shepherd you don't lord over the flock you become a slave to them. Jesus was the greatest example of this as he became a slave to his people while he was leading them at the same time. So instead of making me do pointless stuff to prove my worth to you, you suppose you to be doing stuff for me. Jesus wants us to build people up not tear them down. Now do you really think any Greek organization would use this method?......I didn't think so.....
So now your next question may
am I ok with Christian Greek organizations??
........now considering my best friend is apart of one, you would think my answer would be yes but now so fast my friend; here is a point I would like to make: I feel like Christians try too hard to fit in today's world. We try to mimic the world to make Christianity seem cool to world....why you ask?....
Because the world spits in the face of people who don't want to be cool!
(Thanks Carlito!) But we should separate ourselves from the ways of the world and present something different. Christian organizations are even guilty of separating themselves....I mean like the other Greeks you have black ones and white ones. I am atleast proud of the fact that my best friend who is black joined one that is mostly white. I just don't think Jesus would be happy of the fact that we separate ourselves since we are all suppose to be one body in Christ. I feel like you shouldn't have to go to a Greek organization to seek brother or sisterhood in Christ.....at the church I go to everyone calls each other brother and sister and we treat each other as such. I have yet to find anyone at that church who felt like they should join a Greek organization.
Well I guess that's all for now. I hope I didn't offend anyone with this entry. I just felt like it needed to be said. Please leave feedback whether you agree or disagree. I really want to hear what everyone thinks about this. May the Lord be you all. Until next time.....
