Have you heard about Unity08??
My motto used to be, "when in doubt, vote Democrat", but that was before I became jaded. I realize the Dems have only been in a position to possibly make some long needed changes in Washington a short period of time. I hope they realize they are in this position because voting Democrat was virtually the only way to spank the Republicans' asses.
Over the years, Americans have fought for freedom, civil rights, equality, and changes that made us what we are today. Many of us weren't even born yet when Americans cared so much they risked their livelihood or lives taking their causes to the streets. Somewhere along the line, though, we became content. We can vote if we want to bother, we can expect equal pay for equal work, we can say or do just about anything we want to do - just because. Things might not always seem fair, but hey, we are content to do our own thing and know we are entitled to do just that. We trusted that big political machine to take care of us and do the right thing. Yes, we were content knowing they were stuck with the boring crap... if we even thought about it.
After 9/11, many of us started to pay attention again. We did what we do best - we became one, for a month or two, anyway. Some of us did begin to ask questions, but the current administration was really good at beating us into submission using their own special brand of scare tactics. After Katrina, more of us decided we weren't content anymore. Something good did spring from that nightmare, though. Many of us woke up and got a little smarter. Now add that to all the political scandals, lies, secret agendas, and alllllllllll those narrow minds.
We have to take care of ourselves, but reliable politicians are part of the process, whether you want to believe it, or not. Through time, if people just settled for what was given them, where the hell would we be right now? We don't even have to settle for the same political parties anymore. I'm not saying I agree with every single thing they stand for, but Unity is a real bipartisan group that could actually push the Dems AND Republicans into understanding they are here for US, they represent US. White, black, or any shade in-between, old, young, poor, rich... we all have two things in common. We are Americans, and the Washington folks work for us.
I hope we will educate ourselves and keep our minds open to all options and points of view. When we make a choice, I hope we remain steadfast and fight for what we believe in. Anyway, here's the Unity link:
