Five Wishes < Back

I was recently asked if I had five free wishes what would they be, so here is my list.

5- I'll start by wishing that my family would leave me alone and stop asking what I want to do with my life. People are always asking you this, so you think you're supposed to have an answer. But adults ask this mainly as a conversation starter. They want to know what sort of person you are, and this question is just to get you talking. They ask it the way you might poke a hermit crab in a tide pool, to see what it does.

My first priority is NOT to accumulate wealth. I don't want to be like my parents and the rest of my family. You don't need money to find happiness and most importantly you don't need to be in a rush to choose your life's work. What you need to do is discover what you like. You have to work on stuff you like if you want to be good at what you do.

After graduating I didn't ask myself where I want to be in twenty years, and then ask: what should I do now to get there? I would rather not commit to anything in the future, but just look at the options available now, and subsequently choose those that will give me the most promising range of options afterward. Making a living is only a small part of it. Far more important is to take intellectual responsibility for oneself so long as you're not wasting your time. Work on things that interest you and increase your options, and worry later about which you'll take.

Therefore to answer their question, I want to reside where I can help the less advantaged and provide them with a life filled with enough good things to sustain them. Watching people cling to each other, crying, and holding each other in bad times make me appreciate what I have even more. Seeing them extending their arms until the tips of their fingers is an image that stays forefront in my mind throughout the day.

4- I wish people will stop underestimating their potential. Don't think that you can't do what other people can. People who've done great things tend to seem as if they were a race apart. And most biographies only exaggerate this illusion, partly due to the worshipful attitude biographers inevitably sink into, and partly because, knowing how the story ends, they can't help reforming the plot till it seems like the subject's life was a matter of destiny, the mere unfolding of some innate genius. LOAD OF CRAP if you ask me!

3- I wish the world would accept everyone's views and beliefs whether you believe in a certain God, a higher spirit or absolutely nothing you are entitled to your own opinions and whatever resonates as logical in your state of mind. If you want to breathe religion in every facet of your life that is up to you but don't force your opinions on others.

2- I wish each and every one of you is able to fulfill their wishes but remember to help someone along the way. Helping another human being even if it comes in the most simplistic manner is an extremely powerful and gratifying experience. It is hope, strength and joy. It is the making of a memory unburdened by care or stress.

1- I wish to live a happy life with my boyfriend. I want to wake up every day and wonder how I ended up with such a beautiful person. Every time I see the world in his eyes it will remind me of a magical feeling of a lasting lovers' pact.

Shalom
