THE CORRECT WAY TO ORDER A DRINK < Back
Feb-17-07 07:30 PM  Lvictory23   tags:
This is a basic guide to the Starbucks lingo that only a select few (outside of the company) understand.
  1. Hang up your cell phone, it will speed up your service, and that of those in line behind you. If you are interested in a pastry, or anything from the Ready to eat and Drink case (that is located under the pastry shelf) it is best to ask your cashier to get a pastry first. Going back and forth between pastries and coffee will slow down your experience and increase wait time for your beverage.

Following this step will decrease wait time and you'll get your beverage while it's still hot. Here are the steps to ordering a basic coffee and pastry combination.

As soon as you walk in: Decide what pastry or what sandwhich you'd like to have. Direct attention to your cashier, point out your pastries and please try to be sure of what you want. Getting your pastries first will always be the best thing to do, so that way your cashier doesn't have to run back and forth trying to get coffee and a pastry.

After you've done that, you can follow these steps also.

  1. Decide if you would like a hot drink or a cold drink.
      • For a hot drink, they have 4 sizes:
    • Short (8oz)
  • Tall (12oz)
  • Grande (16oz)
  • Venti (20oz)
    • Note: Venti is the only trade-marked size
  1. Decide what you want:
    1. Brewed coffee, coffee of the week (COW). COW is generally a bold, mild and decaf, though they can change the offerings after 2pm, or as they run out.
      • Remember: If you are inside, ask for room for cream if you need it; It's a lot less embarrasing than cleaning up all the coffee you will spill.
    2. Teas:
      • There are 3 kinds:
        • Green
        • Black
        • Herbal infusions
      • Short and Tall teas come with one tea bag. Grande and Venti come with two.
    3. Non-espresso based drinks:
      • These are generally refered to as creamers or steamers. They are basically a latte with no espresso. They come in any available syrup etc. This includes:
        • Hot chocolates
        • caramel apple ciders
    4. Espresso Drinks:
      • All Lattes, Cappuccinos, and macchiatos have the following shots:
        • 1 in short and tall
        • 2 in grande and venti
      • Remember that just because its bigger doesn't necessarily mean it will have more caffeine, but there are exceptions:
        • Americanos
          • 2 in a tall
          • 3 in grande
          • 4 in venti
        • Mocha Valencias
          • 2 in a tall
          • 2 in grande
          • 3 in venti
      • Milk:
        • Whole (the standard unless specified)
        • Nonfat
        • Breve(half and half)
        • Heavy Whipping Cream (contains 8 pumps of vanilla syrup)
        • Soy
        • Organic
        • Note: All but milk costs more. They can create blended milk, which is low fat; It's a mix of whole and non fat, generally 50/50, though not regulated.
      • Cold Drinks:
        • Same sizes and oz's, but no short size and iced venti is 24 oz.
      • Iced Espresso drinks:
        • Same has the hot, except served over whole ice(non-blended)
      • Cold Bar:
        • Frappuccinos
          • There are 2 basic frappuccinos:
            • Coffee base
            • Creme Base(CBB), which is a mix of a secret powder and nonfat milk.
          • They also offer a Coffee Light, which is made with Sucralose(splenda style sweetener) and are served sans whip, and Decaf Coffee Base.
    5. Note you made espresso to your coffee in either a blend, or affogato which is just on top of it. But adding generally more than one shot to a coffee frappuccino will take away from the caffiene. Also they offer malt powder.
  2. Iced Teas:
    • Green(Zen)
    • Black
    • Passion
These come Shaken with either a dilute of water or lemonade and are served sweetened unless requested otherwise.

The standard for all types is Classic Syrup, which is a flavorless sugar syrup.

In addition, you may ask instead for Valencia (the old standard).
  3. Iced Coffee:
    • Terrazo Blend
      • Served sweetened, with Classic syrup, unless specified
  4. Pastries: Vary by region, and time of season.

Examples

  • A double tall non-fat extra-dry cappuccino.
  • Triple grande sugar free vanilla latte.
  • Iced Venti sweetened black tea lemonade.
  • Tall Green Tea Frappuccino Blended Cream.== Tips ==
  • Remain off of your mobile phone.
  • Be alert, as people will grab any random drink that is shouted out. Keep your receipt just in case you need to get your drink made over. Again, stay alert, because more than 1 person may have the same drink as you (example: "I have a Grande Cafe Latte at the bar!") A grande latte is the most common drink ordered at a starbucks.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something.
  • If you want to try something you're not sure about, ask if you can sample it.
  • If you want just brewed coffee or a tea, come inside instead of just waiting in line at the drive-thru, because it's already made waiting to be poured, and the person who takes your money will generally give you the coffee or tea themselves, ahead of others. *This does not apply to all starbucks, only those limited to dining and drive-thru stores*
  • Staying there? They will serve your beverages in real cups and glasses instead of paper if you ask. Just say: "For Here" when ordering. *Only at certain stores, not all.*
  • Generally offered are a variety of bottled drinks and juices, usually located in a refrigerated shelf beneath the pastry display shelf.
