Competition Play! < Back
Oct-24-06 10:36 PM  Benjie   tags:
So, in my school's competition play, which is Dancing at Lughnasa, I get to play the part of a man named Jack. He spent twenty-five years of his life in Ryanga, Uganda serving in the military. He finally come back to his home in Ireland with barely any trace of an Irish accent, lost in his words, as though he never spoke a word of English in his life, and, worst of all, weakened by malaria. The play takes place in 1936 and the play takes us through three weeks of the protagonist's, Michael's, summer. Jack, throughout the play is making a good recovery; becoming stronger each day. Of course, malaria cannot be cured, just kept from progressing worse. At the end of the play, when Michael is delivering his ending speech to the audience, he informs us that poor Jack died twelve months later. Not only that, but, it seemed that those three weeks in the summer of 1936 were the last of the happy days Michael was to see as a child in that house. His mother spending the rest of her life working at a knitting factory-- she hated it. One of the sisters of Michael's mother ran off to get married, however, we are led to believe that the man she marries is a bad one and we can assume she was not all too happy with her groom. It is a sad play, but, it also has many happy, funny moments in it aswell. Such as the playfulness of the one character, Rose. She was 'simple' and the rest of the house hold took it upon themselves to care for her. Rose, however, wasn't the type to sit around and do nothing, she loved to play and dance... She also loved chocolate biscuits. It is a wonderful play and I'm excited to be apart of it!

Always,
Ben
